Electrical and Electronic Design

Circuit simulations help discover how a device will operate in different operating conditions and environments. For example, a device might be too small to be measured with test instruments, or the device may not yet exist. You may wonder how it will perform in an environment that may be very difficult or costly to arrange.

Using a circuit simulator for electrical and electronic design is important to be competitive today. Circuit analysis is a necessary part of most design and development programs.

Before any problems occur, you can:

 - Optimize prototype testing
  - Reduce prototype testing
  - Help eliminate product failures
  - Increase product reliability
  - Reduce time to market

Sensor Analysis and Design

Physical processes that require monitoring by sensors impose challenging requirements for sensor designers. Sensor technology is constantly improving. For example, smart sensors (ASIC-based) are gaining market share because of their higher sensitivity, better linearity, faster response, rugged packaging, on-chip diagnosis and easier installation. To reduce both the development cost and time to market, modern sensor designers have to adopt a more systematic and concurrent approach to sensor development. Sensor design and development have been, and will continue to be, an engineering of multiple disciplines. Our expertise in circuit design, data acquisition, electromagnetic and EMC can help you create a multi-disciplinary team.

Biomedical Analysis

Biomedical analysis involves modeling the human body as an electromagnetic structure. This is an area that is just beginning to realize the benefits of electromagnetic modeling. In this type of analysis, parts of the body (eg. internal organs) or the whole entity, can be modeled to determine the body's internal electrical operations, as well as how it responds to external electromagnetic fields.

We have experience modeling external electromagnetic fields from the following sources:

- Power lines
  - Radio antennas
  - Portable phones
  - Heated blankets

A biomedical analysis can also determine the electrical fields generated by the heart, and has even been applied at the cell level. API can provide biomedical analysis of a wide variety of physical sources.

Electromagnetic Interference (EMI) Analysis

EMI analysis determines the susceptibility, emissions, coupling     and shielding effects at frequencies ranging from DC to RF.

Applications include EMI problems in:

- Printed circuit boards (PCBs)
  - Integrated circuits (ICs)
  - Connectors
  - Cables
  - Apertures
  - Packaging
  - Wiring
  - Cabinets

It is also possible to analyze crosstalk (unintended electromagnetic coupling between conductors in close proximity) and determine the inductance, capacitance and resistance for various geometries.

Finite Element Analysis (FEA) of a Motor

FEA helps improve your motor design. It is used to evaluate and improve the design of electric motors by looking at:
  -  Torque
  -  Inductance
  -  Back EMF (Electromotive Force)
  -  Flux Saturation
  -  Steady-State Error
  -  Leakage Flux and other Electrical Characteristics

Physical measurements alone have certain limitations--you never know what factors to include for leakage flux when making your calculations. With a computer simulation using a finite element (FE) model, you can test various factors without limiting your tests to only a few prototype models. API's computer models give you the ability to arrive at an optimum solution, because you aren't limited by the high cost of prototype tests.

Data Acquisition System Analysis

High performance data acquisition systems can easily be assembled from off-the-shelf DAQ hardware and software. Our designers can develop cost effective solutions, drawing from a wealth of expertise, including:

Thorough understanding of the physical processes you need to monitor
  -  Thorough knowledge of applicable sensing technologies and principles
  -  Thorough knowledge of signal processing techniques
  -  Hands-on experience using currently available:
      -  Sensors
      -  Signal conditioners
      -  Data storage equipment
      -  Man-to-machine interfaces

No ONE engineer can provide all of these services--API's TEAM of engineers can! API's engineering team works closely with your process engineer to:
  -  Thoroughly understand your particular physical process using appropriate
       math modeling
  -  Choose the right sensor and sensing technology to yield cost effective and
       accurate signals
  -  Determine actual physical quantities to be monitored
  -  Choose the appropriate DAQ hardware and software for signal
conditioning, data conversion, transmission, storage, archiving and
      retrieval
  -  Design and/or select application-specific man-to-machine interfacing that
will make your DAQ work productive and easy to learn

Control System Analysis

Control system analysis has become an indispensable part of modern control system design and implementation. Before an implementation is committed, it is important to investigate system issues such as:
  -
 Dynamic response
  -  Static Performance
  -  Stability
  -  Robustness
  -  Sensitivity
  -  Fault Tolerance

Subtle implementation issues, such as digital realization of a control algorithm, device non-linearity and sensor delay, may cause a system to fail if overlooked in the design phase.

Simulation lets you easily perform "what if" analyses by changing model parameters. For example, you could ask, "What is the effect of doubling this time constant? " - and see results immediately. API engineers have extensive expertise in control system engineering. We can help you by modeling the whole system in a much detail you want.

Numerical Techniques

Numerical technique methods are very useful for optimizing antenna design. Analysis can predict radiation patterns, directivity, and performance before a physical device is even built!

Magnetic Shielding

We have experience in the following magnetic shielding areas:
  -
Our magnetic shielding Magnetic field site measurements and surveys.
  -  Design using computer simulation of shielding for areas, rooms, buildings
     and facilities.
  -  Computer design of source shielding for medical (MRI and biomedical)
equipment, power lines, transformers, switchgear and high current devices.

Our Products
API will be marketing a fetal heart monitor we designed. For more information, please Email us.

We are also looking into marketing a new HiFi stereo cable we designed. For more information please Email us.

API will work with you to help bring your ideas to market. For example, an international client came to us with an idea. We researched the idea to determine what had been done in the past. We then designed a circuit and analyzed the design to optimize performance. We produced the printed circuit board, taking into account EMC and thermal properties. We then built a working prototype and tested it in our lab. Then we helped apply for a patent. API even appeared in their advertising --showing the result of engineering through analysis. We can perform the entire project or the just tasks that require specific help. We can take you from a thought to patent

Analysis as a Marketing Tool

Engineering excellence sells products. It is extremely important to be perceived as an engineering quality leader. Mercedes® has gone to great lengths to market their vehicles as examples of engineering excellence. Motorola®, Lexus®, Hewlett Packard® and countless other companies know the importance of advertising their engineering savvy and technical dominance.

How did these companies reach their goal of being perceived by the public as engineering quality leaders? Part of the answer is creative advertising showcasing their engineering. One new high tech area that could be exploited by advertising is electrical analysis.

Electrical products play a dominant role in our lives. Making our vehicles safer (eg. ABS, air bag sensors, collision avoidance, etc.) and more comfortable (eg. entertainment systems, electric mirrors, heated seats, power windows, etc.). Our homes, hospitals and workplaces rely on electrical products to make us more productive. We continue to add more and more electrical devices which the public demands, but there is a downside. Electrical issues are now the number one warranty liability on most advanced products. The company that convinces the public that it is the engineering quality leader in the electrical arena will have a huge advantage over its competitors.

Electrical analysis is a powerful engineering tool in producing better electrical products. Electrical analysis could also be a powerful tool to market engineering excellence with creative advertising. Electrical analysis produces colorful results that are eye catching and technically advanced.

The future looks brighter for the company that is able to adapt by using technology for its own.
